Fix PostgreSQL error 42P01 by checking the database, schema search path, exact identifier case, migrations, and object permissions.
Quick answer
PostgreSQL error 42P01 means the current connection cannot resolve the named relation. First check the database, search_path, and exact table name; then qualify the schema, use quoted mixed-case names exactly, or apply the missing migration.
FAQs
Why does a PostgreSQL table exist but still say relation does not exist?
The table may be in a schema that is not in the connection’s search_path, the application may be connected to a different database, or the table may have been created with a quoted mixed-case name. Check the catalog and connection context before changing the query.
Does PostgreSQL 42P01 only mean a table is missing?
No. SQLSTATE 42P01 is undefined_table, but PostgreSQL uses relation more broadly. A view, sequence, materialized view, foreign table, or another relation-like object can produce the same error when its name cannot be resolved.
How do I check PostgreSQL search_path?
Run SHOW search_path in the same role and session that fails. If the required schema is absent, qualify the object as schema_name.table_name or deliberately configure the connection’s search path.
Do uppercase PostgreSQL table names cause 42P01?
They can. PostgreSQL folds an unquoted identifier to lowercase. A table created as "Orders" must be referenced as "Orders" with matching case and double quotes; an unquoted Orders is resolved as orders instead.
